The EMERGE Youth Project
As part of the EMERGE Youth project, a series of case studies were collected from entrepreneurs across Europe and beyond. These stories provide valuable insights into the real pressures of professional life, and more importantly the different ways people have learned to cope, adapt, and thrive under stress.
While the background and industries of these entrepreneurs vary widely, from food trucks in Ireland, to tech startups in France/Reunion Island, fitness coaching in Cyprus, and virtual assistance in Indonesia, their experiences highlight common themes that young people can learn from as they build their own futures.
What Causes Stress in Entrepreneurship
The case studies show that professional stress can come from many directions:
· Financial uncertainty – managing unpredictable income and cash flow.
· Client demands – tight deadlines, constant revisions, or late payments.
· Team dynamics - dealing with conflicts, poor communication, or the challenge of hiring staff.
· Self-doubt – imposter syndrome, fear of judgement, or worries about being “too young” to be taken seriously.
· Work-life balance – juggling personal responsibilities alongside growing businesses.
These triggers are not unique to entrepreneurs and reflect the kinds of challenges many young people will encounter in their career journeys.
Strategies for Coping
Despite facing very different situations, the entrepreneurs shared a range of coping strategies that helped them to manage stress and navigate challenging situations:
· Practical organisation – breaking tasks down, making action plans and setting boundaries.
· Communication – talking openly with clients, colleagues, mentors, and support networks.
· Physical wellbeing – turning to sport, meditation, or incorporating good sleep routines to stay resilient and maintain good overall health.
· Creative mindset shifts – reframing stress as energy for growth, learning from setbacks, and treating challenges as opportunities for growth or identifying new prospective ideas.
· Professional support – some turned to coaching, psychotherapy, or cooperative peer networks for deeper guidance and support.
Lessons for Young People
What stands out most in these stories is not the absence of stress, but the ability to adapt and grow through it. The entrepreneurs repeatedly emphasise that:
1. Stress is unavoidable but can be channelled positively.
2. Asking for help is a strength, not a weakness.
3. Small steps forward build confidence and reduce overwhelm.
4. Taking care of your body and mind is essential to sustaining professional success.
Linking the Case Studies to EMERGE Youth’s Mission
The EMERGE Youth project’s upcoming WebApp will integrate lessons from these case studies into interactive tools and activities. By learning from real-world examples, young people can gain practical insights into stress management and apply them in their own lives – whether at school, in their first jobs, or when starting a business of their own.
Through shared experience, storytelling and practical support, EMERGE Youth is creating a resource that not only raises awareness about stress but also empowers youth with strategies to manage it effectively.
Be sure to check out the EMERGE Youth Website or the WebApp when launched to read the case studies in full.
